EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

The Friends' Academic Research Awards provide grant money for research projects led by undergrad or graduate students. Likewise, K-12 school groups are encouraged to visit the Sites.

Academic Awards Program

The mission of the Friends of Coronado Historic Site (FCHS) is to promote and assist conservation and restoration of the Coronado and Jemez historical assets, aid in the development of museum exhibits, and promote, through community outreach, the historical and cultural significance of these historic sites - including the ancestral pueblos of Kuaua and Gíusewa, the Coronado Expedition, and the Mission of San Jose de Los Jemez.

As part of this mission, we established the FCHS Academic Research Awards to provide a grant for relevant research projects by undergraduate and graduate students whose curriculum includes studies that support our goals.

Research proposals should be consistent with the mission of the Friends of Coronado and Jemez Historic Sites.  Priority for awards is given to students interested in pursuing a new research topic that furthers our understanding of the culture and history or pre-history of the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico, especially the areas of our historic sites and their pueblos.  Examples of research topics include the study of Kuaua and Giusewa Pueblos, kiva mural art, Spanish exploration and the Catholic mission system. Projects that attract public interest in the Coronado and Jemez History Sites are a plus.

The invitation to submit research proposals to this Program is sent yearly to educators at local universities and colleges and other institutions whose students have shown research interest in the middle Rio Grande area. An application form containing award criteria and a proposal guide are included with the invitation and also posted on this website (www.kuaua.org)

Selection of the grant awardee is based on their academic status, scholastic references, and the applicability of their research to the FCHS mission as previously described. This grant award is for a maximum of $3,000.  Students may receive an FCHS Research grant twice within their academic career.

As a condition of accepting a Grant, the awardee agrees to provide a description of research methods used, and a copy of all project reports, papers, educational displays and publications resulting from this research grant to the Coronado Historic Site research library. Additionally, the awardee is also expected complete his or her project within a year from receipt of the award and to give a presentation to members of the Friends of Coronado Historic Site sharing their research findings and conclusions.

School Groups

Fiesta 2010-6.jpg

We all learn differently. For many students, hands-on, tactile methods are a great way to absorb and understand history - including New Mexico history - in an impactful way.

Less than 15 miles from most Albuquerque schools, Coronado Historic Site offers docent-led tours (led by Friends volunteers) throughout the school year, Wednesdays through Fridays. Tours are not offered from December through February due to temperatures.

School groups are capped at no more than 50 students and consist of a 75 to 90 minute tour of the Coronado Historic Site. Beginning in spring 2025, hands on activities will be provided that include activities such as yarn spinning or weaving, fiber arts and more. We encourage schools to request funding through various channels in order to provide access to bussing students, especially for underprivileged schools.
